Therapy Dog Program

A therapy dog is a trained animal that provides comfort and support to people in various settings, such as hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and disaster areas. They are not service dogs, which are trained to assist individuals with disabilities.

Our organization provides therapy dog certification 

To earn your initial certification, you’ll need to complete the following steps:

• Successfully pass a temperament assessment
• Submit all required wellness documentation, including:
  • Proof of current vaccinations
  • A negative fecal float test
  • A signed wellness exam form
• Complete our Therapy Dog Foundations course or equivalent private training sessions
• Pass our official therapy dog evaluation, which includes both the AKC Canine Good Citizen and Community Canine tests. 

Certified handler–dog teams will receive a custom therapy dog vest personalized with the dog’s name.

Please note that re-certification is required annually to maintain active status.

• Training Content: Focuses on socialization, basic commands, and specific behaviors for therapy work (e.g., accepting petting, staying calm).
• Handler Training: Handlers may also undergo training to understand how to best work with their therapy dog in various environments.
• Ongoing Education: Continued education is encouraged for both the dog and handler to keep skills sharp.

• Educational Institutions: Reducing anxiety and improving focus in students.
• Crisis Support: Assisting in traumatic situations, like natural disasters.

• Emotional Support: Reduces stress and anxiety for individuals in various settings.
• Improved Social Interaction: Encourages communication and connection among people.
• Physical Benefits: Can lower blood pressure and heart rates in patients.
