What is a Therapy Dog?

A therapy dog is a trained animal that provides comfort and support to people in various settings, such as hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and disaster areas. They are not service dogs, which are trained to assist individuals with disabilities.

Program Structure

  1. Assessment of Dog
    • Temperament Evaluation: Initial assessment to determine if the dog has the right temperament (friendly, calm, and non-aggressive).

  1. Training Duration
    • Basic Obedience Training: 6-12 weeks, depending on the dog's prior training and will make plan after temperament test.
    • Therapy-Specific Training: An additional 8-16 weeks to teach specific skills (e.g., staying calm in crowds, interacting gently with people).
    • Total Time: Approximately 4-6 months from start to certification.

  1. Certification Process
    • Testing: Dogs must pass a certification test to ensure they can perform in therapy settings.
    • Organizations: Various organizations provide certification (e.g., Pet Partners, Therapy Dogs International).

    • Obedience Classes: 6 week CGC Class $150
    • Therapy Training: 8 week Therapy Dog Class $300 for specialized training.

  1. Certification Fees
    • Testing Fee: $50
